Lighting for Green Screen photography and Darkroom Software

The key to great results with Chroma-key backgrounds is good, consistent lighting. The examples below illustrate different lighting and exposures and the results. All of these images were processed with the default settings in Darkroom Booth photo booth software. The same results would be achieved and the same techniques can be used with Darkroom workflow software, Core, Pro and Assembly.

Green Screen Lighting with Darkroom Software

This is an example of good lighting and exposure for green screen. The green is the proper color for Chroma-key and it is even throughout the frame. The result is a good dropout with rich color and no green halo around the subject’s hair.

Green Screen Lighting with Darkroom Software

In this example there is considerable light fall off in the corners so that the green drops to near black. The result is a lower contrast in the color along with poor dropout in the black areas of the uniform.

Green Screen Lighting with Darkroom Software

In the final example the entire image is dark and muddy with little separation between the hair and the background. Also, the green is almost entirely near black. Basically the software cannot tell what is green and what should be dropped out. The result is a completely unacceptable dropout.

Below is an illustration of a basic lighting setup for good green screen results. There is a main light above the camera to light the subject. The subject is a few feet from the green screen background with additional lights to evenly light the green screen. This set up allows you to adjust the brightness of the subject in relation to the background and also reduce or eliminate shadows on the green screen. This is by no means the only way to light for green screen and may not be possible with your booth design.

Phidget for Darkroom Booth

The post Phidget for Darkroom Booth appeared first on Darkroom Software.

What are Phidgets and why do you care?Phidget 1014 with Darkroom Booth

One of the new additions to Darkroom Booth 2 is Phidget control. Phidgets are “Products for USB Sensing and Control”. Huh? Phidgets is a company that makes little boards that can connect to your computer with a USB cable. On the other end of the board, you can plug in and control almost anything. The most common would be things you want to turn on or off or otherwise control. Said another way, Phidget devices give us a way to control things that you can’t plug directly into your computer, like a light or a fan. Anything that has an on/off switch or requires power can be controlled by a Phidget board or relay (Interface Kit). What does this mean for a Photobooth? Well, you can use a Phidget to turn LED lights on or off or blink. When someone starts a booth session, bright LED lights could turn on. When their photos are printing, lights or an arrow near the printer could flash. You could have a rotating light turn on when someone enters the booth and it could turn off when they are done. You could use a Phidget to control a fan, vending machine, or drink dispenser (like a Keg, my personal favorite idea). Your booth could be lit up with Green lights when no one is using the booth and Red lights when the booth is “in session”. A Phidget relay could also control a motorized pan/tilt device so you could actually move your Booth’s camera around. The possibilities are endless. How do Phidgets work in Darkroom Booth 2? Well, here’s where things get fun. In the past, you basically had to have computer programming skills in order to get Phidgets to work with your booth. Our competitors have “how to’s” that run into the 10’s of pages, just to get a single function to work. In Booth 2, you just point and click to setup and control your Phidgets. Here’s an example.Darkroom Booth Phidget controlled light

Let’s say when someone is using my Booth, I want this awesome Red Beacon Light to turn on (available from amazon for $11).

First, I need a basic Phidget Interface Kit. We have tested and many of our customers like the 1014 (available from phidget.com for $60. Click here for the Phidget user guide which will walk you through the setup and show you how to connect the board to a device).

Next, I need to connect the 1014 to my computer via USB cable, then wire the beacon’s on/off switch to one of the 1014’s relays. Don’t worry, with Booth 2, that’s the hardest part. The easy part is setting it up in Booth. Booth installs the Phidget drivers for you, so nothing to worry about there. Plug in your Phidget board, go to Global Settings-> Device Control. On that page, you should see your Phidget Board at the top. On the bottom half of that window, you can tell the Board which relay you want to control at which part of the Booth session. For example, I’d set Relay 1 to turn ON when someone starts a session (Enter Boothmode) and set the relay to OFF when they are done (Exit Boothmode). Here’s what the screen looks like:

Easily set up phidget with Darkroom Booth

You can also see in the bottom we have built in options for blinking and toggling things on and off so you don’t have to know programming to do those basic things.

For those very astute readers out there, you’ll also see a new “hidden” feature we are including in Booth 2. Advanced users (we call them berds for booth-nerds) can tell Booth 2 to run a program or script (like Autohotkey) to do all sorts of unsupported things (like running other programs, playing videos, transferring files). Don’t show this to a beginner, but your Berd friends will love it, and no, you don’t need a Phidget device in order to tell Booth 2 to run scripts or external programs. Here is a screen shot of options:

Easily set up phidget with Darkroom Booth

Well, that’s it. We can’t wait to hear AND see just how you’ll use Phidget support in Booth 2!

How does Booth 2 upgrade work?

The post How does Booth 2 upgrade work? appeared first on Darkroom Software.

Booth2-logo

Darkroom Booth version 2 is an upgrade over 1.5 and so requires its own activation. When you run Booth 2 for the first time, it will ask you for an activation code. There are two kinds of Booth 2 activation codes, Full Code (i.e. a new 2.0 purchase) and Upgrade Code (this could be a free upgrade or paid).

If you purchased Darkroom Booth after 1/1/2015 = Free Upgrade.
If you purchased Darkroom Booth after 1/1/2015 your old 1.5 code is pre-programmed to work as an Upgrade Code! Please note that you will still need to enter your 1.5 code in order to activate version 2. Your 1.5 code was provided when you purchased your Booth software. (If you no longer have your 1.5 code you will need to contact the company from which you purchased the software.) Once you have your code ready, Download and run Booth 2 and enter your code when prompted. After that you are ready to go.

If you purchased Booth before 1/1/2015 = Paid Upgrade.
If you purchased Booth before 1/1/2015, you will need to purchase an upgrade code. You can purchase an upgrade code here. If you are installing Booth 2 over your existing 1.0 software, all you need is your Upgrade Code. Download and run Booth 2, enter your upgrade code, and you are done.

If you want to install the Booth 2 Upgrade on a new unlicensed computer, you will need your old 1.0 code in addition to your newly purchased Upgrade Code. When you run Booth 2 for the first time, Darkroom will ask for your 2.0 code AND your 1.0 code. When your 1.0 code is entered, Darkroom will license the new computer for 1.0. If it can’t license the new computer, you’ll need to deactivate your old or backup computer. Aft that, you’re all set.

New purchase
If you just purchased a new version today – download and run Booth 2, enter the code you received and you are done.

Thank you for using Darkroom Booth! If you have any questions about Booth software or the upgrade process, please don’t hesitate to contact us at support@darkroomsoftware.com

The post Windows 10 – Should I update my photo booth or event photo system? appeared first on Darkroom Software.

UPDATE: Windows 10 has since been released and there are still no known issues when used with Darkroom products.

Windows 10 and Darkroom Software

Microsoft is set to release Windows 10 on July 29th and it will be a free upgrade to all current Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 user. The Darkroom team has tested all of our software products with Windows 10 including Darkroom Core, Pro, Assembly and Darkroom Booth. We have discovered no issues; however, we strongly advise caution before upgrading any operating system. We have no control over peripheral equipment such as printers, cameras, card readers and the like that may or may not have issues with Windows 10. It is always a good policy to test ALL aspects of your photo booth or event photography set up before using it at an actual event. There is no real benefit to being the first to upgrade to Windows 10 and the new OS may have issues itself that are not public yet. So, use caution and always test your entire system for proper operation before going to any event.

If you have any questions please comment below or email support@darkroomsoftware.com

And thank you for using Darkroom Software!

UPDATE: Phidget Idea Contest Winners
We received a lot of great ideas on creative ways to use phidgets in photo booths. These three were our favorites and each will receive a Phidget 1014. Thanks to all who entered!

Tom Garrett

We do a photo booth for a few haunted attractions around Halloween time. It would be great to wire a phidget up to an animatronic jumping skeleton to scare the guest right before a picture is taken. The attractions LOVE genuine scare pictures.

Carl Denver

I would use a phidget to turn on a scrolling LED message board to display “Winner!” when a user answers a certain number of trivia questions correctly.

Post to “Anywhere” with Darkroom Booth and Dropbox

Use an Automator to Post to “Anywhere”

Darkroom Booth integrates with Dropbox

Flickr, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, the list goes on and the requests from your clients get trickier and seem to change by the week! Unlock the social potential of your photo booth with Darkroom Booth photo booth software and Dropbox. Once your photos are uploaded to a Dropbox folder you can use an “Automator” service to push and pull your photos to other apps and services. The most commonly used services of this kind are IFTTT, Zapier and Wappwolf. These services use “recipes,” “zaps” and “beams” to connect your favorite apps. Here are some examples of recipes that use Dropbox.

New Photo in Dropbox –> Post to Twitter
New Photo in Dropbox –> Post to Facebook
New Photo in Dropbox –> Post to Flickr
New Photo in Dropbox –> Post to Pinterest
New Photo in Dropbox –> Copy to Google Drive

How easy is this with Darkroom?  Well, all you have to do is add your Dropbox account to Darkroom and set the folder you want to save images to.  Then you turn on your recipe, zap, or Beam and voila, images go from Booth to Twitter, Instagram, or whatever the “it” service is next week! Here is a video to show you how to set up Dropbox in Booth.

#Hashtag Slideshow with Darkroom Booth

Now that you know how to go from Darkroom to Anywhere, how about a full reverse?  You can also bring images in! For example, you can monitor an Instagram hashtag or user and automatically copy those images to a Dropbox folder. In Booth, you can set up a slideshow to “mix-in” photos from that Dropbox folder – producing a #hashtag slideshow. This is very popular at weddings, parties, and corporate events, most of which have an associated hashtag these days.

Internet and time considerations

It is important to note that the services mentioned here require an internet connection, sometimes a tough thing to access at a wedding or large event (might be worth investing in your own “Hotspot” available from you mobile phone provider). Also, there is a time lag associated with these services. For example, IFTTT generally checks for new data every 15 minutes but some recipes run even faster. Zapier is the same; however, you can pay a monthly fee of $50 to speed it up to check every 5 minutes.

Darkroom Booth and Darkroom Core – What’s the difference?

$

The post Darkroom Booth and Darkroom Core – What’s the difference? appeared first on Darkroom Software.

As the lines between the traditional photo booth experience and good old fashioned event photography become more blurred, we thought it might be a good time to explain the differences between Darkroom Booth, our popular photo booth software and Darkroom Core & Pro, our industry standard event photography workflow management software.

Gone are the days when a photo booth meant cramming into a dark little cabinet and pushing a button to get a photo. Now there are “photo booths” that don’t include a booth. There are photo booths where an actual photographer takes the photo or where guests use a “clicker” to take their own photo. There are photo booths that print traditional 2×6 strips but others that print 6×8 jumbo strips or even posters. On the other end, there are Santa Claus photo operations that are using an automated “open-air” style photo booth instead of a traditional photo set up that would have included a photographer, big lights and an assistant. Photo marketing events ditch the photographer and set up a customized branded photo booth. And even more telling and maybe significant to your business: long time event photographers are building photo booths and experienced photo booth companies are accepting jobs that include event photography.

So I asked a veteran, our very own operations manager Wally Carnes, to create an easy to read list of the key differences between Darkroom Booth and Darkroom Core software. Wally is a 35 year veteran of the photography industry who has managed a professional photo lab, shot hundreds of traditional events and weddings as a professional photographer, and has operated a photo booth business for 10 years.

“Darkroom Booth is designed to be an automated, user operated photo booth application where Core is designed to have a more flexible workflow to provide a photographer or operator a variety of options for event activations and studio operation.” ~ Wally Carnes

Top 5 Reasons to Keep Your Photo Booth Software up to Date

The post Top 5 Reasons to Keep Your Photo Booth Software up to Date appeared first on Darkroom Software.

Top 5 Reasons to update your photo booth software

Keeping your photo booth software up to date is important for several reasons. Here are a few of the more important reasons…

1. Support for the latest cameras, printers, computers and operating systems.

By keeping your photo booth software up to date you are ensuring that your software will work with the latest webcams, digital SLRs, photo printers, computers, tablets and operating systems. New or updated operating software (ie Windows) can often affect the operation of application software. Even if you don’t upgrade your operating software it is wise to update your applications. The developers at Darkroom continuously work to keep Booth software up to date and tested with the latest and greatest.

2. Be prepared for that call from a client that asks for something out of the box.

The latest version of Darkroom Booth has many new features that enables users to respond to special requests from their clients. For example:

“Can your photo booth send photos to the attendees of my party by email and text?”

“Can your photo booth display a slide show that includes photo booth pictures, photos from my wedding hashtag and some of my engagement photos?”

“Can your photo booth take a survey of attendees of my corporate event? I also want the survey data and contact information after the event.”

3. Everyone makes a 2×6 strip! Turn your booth into an Experience.

Go beyond the printed strip and turn your photo booth into an experience. The latest version of Darkroom Booth includes new features that enable you to make your photo booth offering more of an experience:

Add video clips to your photo booth that feature the bride and groom or prompt the users. The video could be a promotion for the client or for your business. There are many possibilities for where the videos appear and their purposes.

Engage clients with interactive screens that allow users to change the color of the screen or print, choose the print size they want, reprint their photo, take a survey or leave a video message for the bride and groom, host or sponsor.

Make Slideshows a part of your photo booth experience. Slideshows in the latest version of Booth are easy to add and customize. Your slideshow can run in your photo booth in attract mode, on external monitors, projectors or even remotely over a network. Show the individual booth photos, the printed strips, or create a new template for a totally customized show! Mix in other images, download from social media or monitor a hashtag.

Offer animated GIFs. With the latest version of Booth you can easily create animated GIFs to offer your customers a truly unique photo booth experience.

Visit the Booth 2 product page to see video clips of new features in action.

4. Take advantage of the latest optimizations.

The team at Darkroom Software incorporate feedback from users into their software development. Therefore, Darkroom Booth updates often include little “optimizations” in the software derived from our users and our own testing. These little changes can make setting up or operating your photo booth software easier or more efficient. For example, enhancing dialog boxes or improving feature choices, tweaking the code to make certain operations faster or eliminating choices and processes that are not frequently used. Take advantage of these optimizations by keeping your software up to date.

5. It’s easy to do.

It’s easy to update your software. Simply click on “Global Settings” in the upper right hand corner of Booth. From there click on “Application Updates.” You will then see a screen that will prompt you to update if there is one available. You can also visit our download page, download the latest update and click to install it. If you still own Booth 1.5 and would like to upgrade, here is an offer to Save $25 through January 2016. Use coupon code BOOTH2U when purchasing the Booth 2 upgrade here and save $25.

Booth 2.5 Overview

When we posted our Booth 2.5 Preview video with the screen shot above we received lots of questions about the photo booth set up in the picture. It is the Vu-2 Kit from Tether Tools. We like it for testing and demonstrating as all the components are visible and easy to adjust and remove. It is great for event photography but can also be used as an “open air” style photo booth. Here is a detailed description from our friends at Tether Tools.

Studio Vu-2 Kit from Tether Tools Quickly and Easily Turns Your Gear into a Photo Booth

High in quality, but low in price, the Studio Vu-2 Photo Booth from Tether Tools sets up and breakdown with ease, is fully customizable, and best of all, it generates extra event revenue while using your existing gear.

Did you know…

You can style the dynamic text that shows up in the text tab by using the “Insert Special Text” button. By “Style” we are referring to font type, size, color, opacity, along with many other options. You can set your countdown to be 300 points and 50% transparent or while your start text is a different color, size and font. The possibilities are only limited by your creativity.

Did you know…
If you do not add a live-view to a screen template, Darkroom Booth will automatically use the next available photo object as the live-view. This is really helpful when you need the live-view to move throughout your screen template. This is also helpful if you have a single photo session and you want a big live-view and then a large preview after the image is captured.

Here is a link to a free template to try it for yourself. FREE TEMPLATE
